The Schools for Schools Program began at Emerald Primary School in 2011. Aiming to connect the lives of students here in Australian with those of the student age children in the red light area in Kamathipura, the program pilot was a real success!. As part of cultural exchange, and relationship building the Picture Pal program produced a calendar including amazing artwork exchanged between students in Australia and India. Amy shares how this experience of walking along side the AAWC outreach workers has impacted her:
What stands out the most is despite the poverty, the sorrow, and the despair; hope overrides the undercurrent of doom that lurks throughout Kamithipura. It penetrates through the heavy stink of sewerage and hits the nostrils as strongly as the toxic air. This is a place where women are ashamed of imposed duties beyond their control, where betrayals of traffickers are accepted by society as life choices made by slaves. It’s a place where women are beaten, tortured and raped into accepting ‘their destiny.’ Yet, these same women who have nothing to their names, still find smiles to give friendly westerners who come to talk.
